My brother David is an alright sort of bloke, though I'd never say that
to his face of course.
At the end of March 2003 he drove the hundred miles from his home in
Nottingham, to London. Then ungaraged my Herald, cleaned it, emptied
the junk I'd left in it, filled it with petrol and drove it a further 80
miles to the docks in Southampton... before having to do the journey
home.
Then on April 2nd the good ship Tai Shan (a ro-ro car transported) set sail for the New World... well, New Jersey
to be exact.
My head was full of images
of a rusting old wreck, and I tried to forget that roll-on roll-off car
transport ships are often referred to as "roll-on roll-off
roll-over" because of stability problems.
On Wednesday March 16th I picked up the car at Port Newark and drove
it into the city. The terrible potholes in New York's roads are a
cause for concern, but so far she really seems to have turned NYC's
head... no easy task.
On Friday the 18th the car was registered with the New York State DMV
and received a standard NY license plate, on the same day the 64HERALD
plates were ordered (four week delivery time).
